Quotes on Christmas

Merry Christmas

During the Christmas season we celebrate the Incarnation: the fact that the Son of God assumed a human nature in order to accomplish our salvation in it (Catechism 461).

In honor of this season, I want to share 12 quotes.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’” ~ Isaiah the Prophet

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.” ~ Archangel Gabriel to Mary

“Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” ~ Angel to the shepherds

“The endurance of darkness is the preparation for great light.” ~ St. John of the Cross

“Christ is born, glorify Him! Christ from heaven, go out to meet Him! Christ on earth, be exalted! Sing to the Lord all the whole earth; and that I may join both in one word, let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, for Him who is of heaven and then of earth. Christ in the flesh, rejoice with trembling and with joy; with trembling because of your sins, with joy because of your hope.” ~ St. Gregory Nazianzen

“I cannot fear a God who made Himself so small for me!” ~ St. Thérèse of Lisieux

“Man’s maker was made man, that He, Ruler of the stars, might nurse at His mother’s breast; that the Bread might hunger, the Fountain thirst, the Light sleep, the Way be tired on its journey; that the Truth might be accused of false witness, the Teacher be beaten with whips, the Foundation be suspended on wood; that Strength might grow weak; that the Healer might be wounded; that Life might die.” ~ St. Augustine of Hippo

“The King of Heaven deigned to be born in a stable, because He came to destroy pride, the cause of man’s ruin.” ~ St. Alphonsus de Liguori

“O Father, in your Truth (that is to say, in your Son, humbled, needy and homeless) you have humbled me. He was humbled in the womb of the Virgin, needy in the manger of the sheep, and homeless on the wood of the Cross. Nothing so humbles the proud sinner as the humility of Jesus Christ’s humanity.” ~ St. Anthony of Padua

“Open wide your door to the one who comes. Open your soul, throw open the depths of your heart to see the riches of simplicity, the treasures of peace, the sweetness of grace. Open your heart and run to meet the Sun of eternal light that illuminates all men.” ~ St. Ambrose of Milan

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.” ~ St. John the Evangelist

“May the joy of Christmas and the peace which the Birth of the Savior brings into the world be in your hearts forever.” ~ St. John Paul II
