The Sacrament of Confession: Part I

In my mid-twenties I began to practice my Catholic Faith more seriously and attend Mass regularly. During that time, I kept hearing a priest talk about confession during his homilies.

Even though I wanted to go to confession, I didn’t know much about it because I wasn’t taught to go regularly.

I desired to understand why I need to receive the sacrament, what it is and the effects.

Surrender

Surrender usually refers to defeat and has a negative connotation in society. In Christianity, surrender has an entirely different meaning; and it’s what we’re meant to strive for in our relationship with God!

In my previous post, Waiting…, I emphasized that we’re called to put our lives in the Lord’s hands and trust the plan that He has for each of us; we must genuinely seek God’s will and pray for the grace to accept it. Another word for these actions is surrender.

Our goal as Christians is to allow God to be in charge, trust that He’ll take care of us and not worry about anything.

It may seem that if we give ourselves to Him, we’ll lose something (or everything). That’s a lie that the voices of the world tell us. Jesus tells us the truth:

Divine Mercy

In my previous post, Change, I promised that I would focus on trust in the next one. I’m a woman of my word, so here it is!

Trust is a theme that will appear in many of my posts (either directly or indirectly). While there are several reasons for this, the main reason is because trust is the key to our faith and relationship with God.

When we put our trust in the Lord, our lives and souls are transformed. The more we trust, the more graces we receive and the closer we’re united to Him.

One’s confidence in God is increased and strengthened when the soul is nourished with prayer, Sacred Scripture and writings aligned with Church teaching, Mass, and the Sacraments (especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation). One way that I’ve increased my trust in God has been through my devotion to Divine Mercy.
